CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY

B.A. IN PUBLIC RELATIONS & ADVERTISING, DODGE COLLEGE OF FILM & MEDIA ARTS | MINOR IN ENGLISH

CLASS OF 2017 / ORANGE, CA

Founded in 1861, Chapman University is a private liberal arts institution in Orange County, California. When I first came to Chapman, on August 20, 2013, I was jet-lagged, introverted, and lost. However, by the time I walked across the stage on May 20, 2017, I picked up leadership opportunities, made incredible friends, and grew in ways I didn't think possible.

While at Chapman, I was on the Dean's Scholarship, joined several clubs, and had many internships. Moreover, the people I met during my undergraduate years shaped who I am today by pushing me out of my comfort zone, encouraging me when I was unsure, and providing me with a support system when I was 8,500 miles from home.

OFFICE OF RESIDENCE LIFE & FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE

ORIENTATION LEADER & PEER MENTOR

Chapman's orientation program is created specifically for freshmen moving into the dorms in the fall. Orientation Leaders are chosen through an intensive application process with three rounds to help guide a group of 20-30 freshmen through the first week of their college experience. As an Orientation Leader for two years, I attended diversity and safety trainings, worked with other Orientation Leaders, and assisted students through any issues they had. While this responsibility was most prominent the last two weeks of August, before and during orientation, my interactions with the orientation staff and my students went far beyond. Check out this video for a BTS sneak peak of how much fun it was being an OL.

My junior year, I was also chosen as a peer mentor for a freshman in the fall semester. My duties included meeting with her twice a month, helping her get assimilated at Chapman, and addressing any issues she had.

GAMMA PHI BETA

EPSILON NU CHAPTER | MEMBER

Gamma Phi Beta is an international sorority founded in 1864 with over 130 collegiate chapters. While I initially thought I would never join a sorority, Chapman's supportive and philanthropy-driven Greek community was one I couldn't not be a part of. As an active member of the Epsilon Nu chapter of Gamma Phi Beta, I served in multiple committees including the merchandising committee, new member education committee, and (most actively in) the events committee. As part of the events committee, I contacted vendors, worked with other officers in our chapter, communicated with representatives from other clubs and organizations on campus, and planned a backyard movie night for 250+ students.

While being involved in Greek Life can sometimes come with negative connotations and stereotypes, being a Gamma Phi at Chapman only enriched my college experience. **Also, if you have some time, I highly recommend checking out videos of our lip-synch and dance philanthropy event- Airbands

PROWL MAGAZINE

WRITER

Prowl Magazine is Chapman University's only online literary magazine that features stories and articles about campus life, entertainment, fitness, travel, and more. The magazine is made by and for Chapman students, but receives readership from all over the world. As a member of the team and part of ENG 319: Online Magazine Production in the fall of 2014, I not only wrote four articles and a column, but also edited stories written by my peers. The most interesting article I wrote? A piece about college students naming their dorm rooms, apartments, and off campus houses. From Fort Knox to Monticello and The Furnace to Tug Boat, I got to learn the stories behind all sorts of names.

TOXIQUE

DANCER

Toxique is an all-women's step and hip-hop dance team that promotes female empowerment, positive body image, and a #GirlBoss attitude by exuding strength and sensuality through dance. Toxique performs twice a semester for the student body, at Chapman University's Student Union and Memorial Hall. Having no dance background other than dancing on tables and at weddings, I still consider it a fluke that they let me in. That being said, I'm not complaining.

CHAPMAN PANHELLENIC

RHO GAMMA

Chapman Panhellenic, as part of the National Panhellenic Conference, is the governing body that presides over all the sororities on campus. Rho Gammas, or recruitment leaders, are sorority women chosen by Panhellenic to help guide and support women going through recruitment. As a Rho Gamma in spring 2017, I attended diversity and safety training, helped foster a safe space for the women in my group, and worked together the Rho Gamma and Panhellenic staff. This experience was especially rewarding since I got the opportunity to serve as a mentor and a friend for girls while they tried to find a place they felt comfortable.

THE PANTHER

STUDENT JOURNALIST

The Panther is Chapman University's official student-run newspaper. While the paper is published in print weekly, articles are also published online daily. As a student journalist in spring 2015, I wrote three articles, either news or features, a week. I was also enrolled in ENG 210: Panther Workshop. The highlight of my time with The Panther was interviewing Partch ensemble member and Chapman professor, Nick Terry, DMA. As part of Partch, Terry won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium and I got to talk to him right after it happened!

UNIVERSITY PROGRAMMING BOARD

MARKETING COMMITTEE | MEMBER

Chapman's University Programming Board (UPB) works toward creating events for students to attend in order to further social, cultural, and intellectual pursuits. UPB is composed of six different committees, one of them being marketing. As part of the marketing committee, I worked in smaller groups within the committee to create publicity for events. My responsibilities included managing guerrilla tactics, writing and scheduling Facebook posts, and overseeing communication within the organization itself.
